I am currently enrolled at Metropolitan State College in Denver, Colorado and currently working on my Post-Bachelor's teaching licensure for K through 6th or for Special Education. I actually haven't decided yet... I work with Cherry Creek Schools as a Vision Technician. Right now I am alternating between 2 students. One in kindergarten, and a 3rd grader. This is only my second year as a teaching assistant so I still have lots to learn. I work with an incredible teacher of the Visually impaired named Judy Wiepert. That is her on the home page in white with one of the wonderful students I get to work with. He is reading braille on Dr. Suess day to a therapy dog that came to the school. Last year I worked with him exclusively and it was just amazing to watch how braille opened his world and helped him to grow both as a person and academically. I feel extremely privileged to be a part of my student's lives.
I have been married since 1998 and have one super-duper 8-year old daughter who loves school, learning, golfing, swimming, diving and gymnastics. She also loves Spongebob and Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. My husband works for Jeffferson County Schools as a research analyst. In the winter we love going snowboarding as a family activity. The picture below left is from Copper Mountain's Hot Chocolate Sleigh Ride. The photo on the right is from last year's Christmas card. We also have two crazy and friendly white boxers from HoBo Care Boxer Rescue who kept getting distracted that day.
Teaching Philosophy
It is important to recognize teaching as a dynamic and constantly interactive process. What this means to me is that it is important to seek out new methods and technologies that can engage students. This current generation of students is highly motivated by computer technologies and learning. If a student is having a hard time learning a concept, it is my responsibility to step back and figure out a way to teach in a manner which he or she can understand it. All individuals learn differently. It is important to understand these differences and approach subject matter in several different ways. The principals of the Universal Design for learning stress these differences in learning styles while making material accessible to all students. I believe in inclusivity of all students when possible in the classroom. All students are individuals and special in their own ways. All students need to be challenged at all levels and I hope that I can use the tools of creativity, ingenuity and flexibility to do this as a teacher.
